Did you set a new year’s resolution or intention? If so, what was it and how’s it going so far?
This year, I aspire to dedicate ample time to nurture my well-being and rediscover my inner-self. Having learned the invaluable lesson that you can’t pour from an empty cup, I recognize that I am of best service to others when I am of service to myself. To actively pursue this goal, I’ve set out to explore new hobbies and master activities that contribute to my overall well-being. Incorporating practices such as yoga, meditation, and journaling into my routine is a deliberate effort to strike a harmonious balance between productivity and personal care.

I have also made a conscious decision to delete all social media platforms indefinitely to enhance this journey. In an era dominated by mass and unconscious consumerism, I seek to be more mindful of what I expose myself to and how it shapes my perception of self and life. By distancing myself from aimless scrolling, I aim to reconnect with my inner self and break free from the pervasive influence of digital consumption.

Redirecting the hours I once spent scrolling on my phone towards hobbies and activities has been a challenge, but even in these early phases, it has already yielded moments of clarity and a renewed sense of focus. I hope this intentional shift lays the groundwork for a more profound connection with both myself and the world around me.

What did the scholarship allow you to do that you otherwise wouldn’t have done?
I still vividly remember the day I was awarded the Lilly Endowment Community Scholarship in 2020. That moment will forever be etched in my memory as one of the most profound and transformative experiences of my life. I grew up in a single-parent household and am among the first in my family to embark on the journey of higher education. Before being awarded this scholarship, I grappled with the fear that financial hurdles and a lack of guidance would impede my success in college. This scholarship emerged as my beacon of hope, liberating me from persistent concerns about my future and allowing me to fully embrace the gift of education. This newfound freedom redirected my focus toward personal growth and empowered me to pursue dreams I had cherished since childhood.

Throughout my time at IU, the opportunities afforded by the scholarship have allowed me to turn my aspirations into reality. I have immersed myself in various leadership positions, notably serving as the Director of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion in IU Student Government. Last summer, my dream of studying abroad materialized as I explored European healthcare systems and wellness tourism in Barcelona, Spain. Moreover, as a Hoosier Scholar Ambassador for the IU Office of Scholarships, I have traveled to recruitment events and connected with over 1,500 prospective students. These roles have given me the privilege to give back to my community while pursuing an education.

The benefits of the Lilly Endowment Community Scholarship extend far beyond financial security. The program directors have provided unwavering emotional support and guidance, which has helped me navigate the challenges of my collegiate journey. The Lilly Scholars Network has also been a valuable platform for connecting with fellow scholars and accomplished alumni.

In essence, this scholarship has not only opened doors to education but has also woven a tapestry of support, growth, and community around me. It has empowered me to transcend financial barriers and craft a collegiate experience filled with purpose, leadership, and meaningful connections. Grateful does not begin to capture the depth of my appreciation for the opportunities this scholarship has bestowed upon me.

How have you contributed to your community?
Throughout my collegiate journey, I’ve actively assumed various leadership roles with a passion for breaking down barriers between higher education and students from diverse or low-income backgrounds. As the Director of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion in IU Student Government, I helped build impactful initiatives aimed at cultivating a more inclusive, safe, and supportive campus environment. A noteworthy accomplishment was the establishment of an on-campus headshot photo booth, providing students with free professional photos for networking and career opportunities. Additionally, I coordinated the distribution of over 500 Birdies (personal safety devices) to students at no cost, contributing to the enhanced safety and security of our community. These proactive initiatives have allowed me to make a tangible difference in the lives of my fellow students, serving my community by creating positive and lasting impacts.

What’s one community organization you’re proud to be a part of?
I take immense pride in being an Emerging Scholar from the Center for Leadership Development (CLD) program. This community organization holds a special place in my heart due to its profound commitment to fostering leadership and personal development among minority youth.

CLD has been more than a community organization for me; it has been a guiding force in my life. The skills, values, and opportunities I’ve gained as a participant have not only shaped my academic success but have also established a strong foundation for my personal and professional pursuits. Through valuable mentorship and transformative programming, I gained insights to real-world applications of education, work ethics, and various career paths. The emphasis on character development within these programs also instilled traits such as self-confidence, discipline, dedication, and resilience.

Participating in CLD programs encouraged me to embrace my worth and equipped me with the tools to navigate friendships, relationships, and the pursuit of excellence. This contribution aligns with the broader vision of a society where minority youth are empowered to lead and succeed. As I navigate my future endeavors, I carry the lessons learned at CLD with pride.
